BLACK KING ENTERTAINMENT INC.
Company Profile
Founded by filmmaker, director, and humanitarian Rico King, Black King Entertainment Inc. (BKE) is a Toronto-based film, television, theatre, and media company dedicated to creating powerful stories that educate, inspire, and stand the test of time.
Since its inception, BKE has built a reputation for producing socially conscious, culturally significant content that amplifies underrepresented voices and explores issues such as violence, justice, resilience, poverty, and community transformation. Through compelling storytelling and a commitment to authenticity, the company seeks to create work that not only entertains audiences but also drives meaningful dialogue and lasting social impact.
Black King Entertainment first gained attention through its groundbreaking urban drama series, G Code: Tales of King City. Released independently, the series generated significant grassroots buzz throughout Houston's inner-city communities before expanding nationwide. Through direct-to-consumer distribution, G Code sold more than 100,000 DVDs across the United States, becoming an independent success story and providing the financial foundation that allowed the company to produce its early documentary slate.
Building upon that momentum, BKE released its first feature documentary, Down in The Hole (2015), directed by Rico King. The film examined police brutality, systemic oppression, and life in Baltimore during the aftermath of the Freddie Gray case. The documentary earned both the Best Documentary Award and the prestigious Diamond Award at the Mount Vernon Film Festival, establishing Black King Entertainment as an emerging force in socially conscious filmmaking.
In 2018, the company released Tears in the Bayou, a powerful documentary exploring gun violence and community resilience in Houston, Texas. The film went on to become the most-viewed documentary from the state of Texas and earned the Diamond Award at the Mount Vernon Film Festival. The documentary continues to be screened by educators, researchers, and community organizations as a catalyst for discussion and learning.
In 2026, Black King Entertainment achieved its most significant milestone to date with Nekai Walks, a feature documentary produced in partnership with TVO. Following Toronto teenager Nekai Foster's journey after surviving a life-altering shooting, the film received widespread critical acclaim and emerged as one of Canada's most celebrated documentaries of the year. The film won the Rogers Audience Award for Best Canadian Documentary and the Students' Choice Award for Best Documentary at Hot Docs, earning more prize money than any other documentary at the festival. Its success further demonstrated Black King Entertainment's ability to create stories that resonate with audiences while driving meaningful social conversations.
Today, Black King Entertainment develops and produces documentaries, scripted television series, feature films, and live theatrical productions. The company's growing slate includes projects across Canada, the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean, with a particular focus on underrepresented voices and globally relevant human stories.
From Houston to Toronto and beyond, Black King Entertainment remains committed to its founding belief:
Great stories don't simply entertain; they change how people see the world.
